Many security companies protect large areas such as indoor and outdoor shopping malls and concert halls during special events. Inevitably, an incident will happen several feet away from where an officer is and he or she will need to get there quickly. Anderson Security Company of Phoenix has trained officers who use Segways, two-wheeled self-balancing electric vehicles, while on patrol.
"Officers have the ability to cover more ground and can respond quickly if there is an emergency," said Kimberly Anderson-Matich, president and owner of Anderson Security. "The electric Segways provide a sustainable solution to security as they use no gas, have no emissions and are easy to maintain."
Segways were unveiled in 2001 and have quickly become an innovative tool for security and law enforcement. Once charged, they can run for about eight hours. Police departments from Philadelphia to Chicago to Denver are using Segways to patrol. Security officers can ride Segways while patrolling indoors as well as outdoors and the units have been used in off-road patrolling.
Anderson Security also offers Sky Watch, a mobile surveillance unit that evaluates to a second story "eye-level" elevation. The unit has closed circuit television cameras that monitor sites without electricity. The units can also be manned by a security officer.
"From Segway to Skywatch to armed security for special events, we are always looking for new ways to improve the way we protect our clients," Anderson-Matich said.
