Donation Wizard Urges Americans to Clean Up Highways by Donating Junk Cars to Charity

Cash-for-Clunkers bill encourages auto sales, but doesn't do the environment justice.

Warren, RI (PRWEB) July 14, 2009 -- There is currently a law in Washington called "Cash for Clunkers" that is aimed at getting people to trade in fuel-inefficient cars for newer, better MPG models. It has good intentions, but it doesn't go far enough.

Why make Americans buy new cars? Instead, America should focus on getting the dirtiest cars off roads and driving less. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, cars in the U.S. emit more than 333 million tons of carbon dioxide on an annual basis, an amount equal to one-fifth of the world's total carbon dioxide emissions. And vehicles 15 years and older represent less than 25% of miles driven, but account for approximately 75% of the most harmful emissions.

If people really want to make a difference, they can donate their clunkers to a charity they know and trust - they truly need the money in this economy. Or people can take the bus, walk or rideshare more often. www.zipcar.com is a great alternative to car ownership.

People can research reputable charities at www.charitynavigator.com. They should choose an organization with well-recognized work, then call them and ask how much the charity will receive and where the money will be spent. It is wise to inquire about how the vehicle will be handled. Donors will want to know that the vehicle will be picked up and transported by a properly licensed and insured towing company, and that the legal transfer of the vehicle will be handled by a licensed dealer contracted by the charity. Finally, donors should make sure they sign the title directly over to the charity or their agent. By leaving the title blank, donors may remain liable for the vehicle.

The charity car donation process is simple with www.donationwizard.com. Donation Wizard works with the nation's most reputable and respected charities, including Habitat for Humanity, National Public Radio, Arthritis Foundation, March of Dimes, One Laptop per Child, Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation and Feed the Children.

Donation Wizard consistently returns between 75 and 80% of the gross dollar back to its charities. No national charitable car donation program returns a higher percentage. The proceeds from just one car donation could pay for windows for a family in need of decent housing, food for a starving child, medical care and research for an ailing patient, or shelter for a stray dog. Donation Wizard accepts almost all vehicles. To donate a car, truck, boat or RV, call 1-877-957-2277 toll-free or visit www.donationwizard.com.
