Elk Grove Village, IL (PRWEB) July 15, 2009
Ascender Corporation, a leading provider of advanced font products, announced today that it would be offering web font licenses from its AscenderFonts.com font e-commerce website by late July.
AscenderFonts.com distributes thousands of fonts from a variety of type foundries in the TrueType and OpenType font format. Until now, these fonts were licensed solely for use on desktop computers. The new Web Fonts license allows web designers to post fonts in a less restrictive implementation of the Embedded OpenType (EOT) font format to their websites. This enables web pages to be viewed as intended by the designer with high quality commercial fonts.
Ascender intends to provide web designers with access to many of the high quality commercial fonts which they have been demanding, and to end the stalemate over the use of fonts on the web.
Ascender supports a less restrictive implementation of EOT which the company has been calling "EOT Lite". Fonts in the EOT Lite format do not include URL binding and proprietary compression technology, which are included in the full EOT specification, but which have been objected to by certain browser developers.
"EOT Lite is a significant step forward with respect to web fonts" said Ira Mirochnick, president of Ascender. "EOT Lite compromises on the primary objections to EOT, still works with Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser and can now quickly be implemented by other browsers. We can have an easy to use solution across all browsers in just a matter of months that can end the stalemate over the use of fonts on the web."
Ascender also plans to provide a royalty-free tool to other font developers to enable the rapid creation of EOT Lite font libraries.
By late July, Ascender will offer EOT Lite licenses to its entire Ascender library, all of the Microsoft fonts offered by Ascender, over 700 fonts offered by Ascender from the Monotype Corporation collection, the Lucida family of fonts from Bigelow & Holmes, the Typodermic library from Ray Larabie, the URW++ Library, and fonts offered by Ascender from other type designers and foundries including Boutros International, Chank, LetterPerfect, OutrasFontes, ParaType, Tour De Force and others.
"We have made it easy for designers to acquire the rights they need to use high quality commercial fonts in a web font format that can be deployed instantly onto their websites" said Bill Davis, vice-president of Ascender. "Further, our pricing model makes web fonts affordable and addresses small, medium and large scale websites."
