ESPN took to the "green" red carpet with Beyond Zebra, Inc. (http://www.beyondzebra.net) in tow to unveil this year's star-studded and, for the first time, carbon neutral ESPYs. To emphasize the ESPYs continued commitment to environmentally friendly productions, the BZI team was challenged to provide greener promotional opportunities than ever before. In addition to the sustainable press credential lanyards and post-consumer recycled tote bags used for deliveries, BZI outfitted the staff with climate neutral shirts produced under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). These GM-free, 100% certified organic cotton T-shirts were manufactured solely utilizing renewable energy generated from wind power AND are the first garments to be labeled and approved under the Carbon Trust. Also, in a new twist on Green, staffers were asked to provide used clothing purchased from thrift stores which were then printed with the event logo and worn on the preparation days leading up to the award ceremony.
ESPN's efforts to keep the 2009 ESPYs carbon neutral included solar and wind power to generate energy for the press tent, while celebrities from the sports and entertainment world boogied down the red carpet made from post-consumer recycled fibers to music blaring from a DJ booth powered by its own portable solar panels. In alignment with the ESPYs' waste-free commitment, the solar panels will be donated to local charities and the carpet will be reused by other venues.
The 2009 ESPYs, which taped on July 15, will air on Sunday, July 19 at 9:00 p.m. E.S.T. on ESPN. The action-packed event gathers celebrities from entertainment and sports to commemorate the best moments of the year in sports. This year's host, Samuel L. Jackson, was joined by the world's top athletes and Hollywood's biggest stars including Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Dana Torres, Condoleezza Rice, Demi Moore, Kobe Bryant, and Rob Lowe.
