When Stephen Adele started iSatori (http://www.isatoritech.com) five years ago, he believed the single most important factor in its long-term success would be the trust he earned with iSatori's products, actions, and decisions. We may not be able to protect ourselves completely against untrustworthy people in the world, but we can take significant steps to reduce our risks. Here are four things we can do to help protect ourselves and our families from potential tampering incidents.

When Stephen Adele started iSatori (http://www.isatoritech.com) five years ago, he believed the single most important factor in its long-term success would be the trust he earned with iSatori's products, actions, and decisions.

"The desire to be unequivocally trustworthy has always been a key part of iSatori's culture," explains Adele. "Every business decision we make is driven by the desire to earn the trust of our consumers, retailers, and suppliers. That is why I was so shocked by the news that somebody had deliberately put a box cutter blade in one of our vials of the Hardcore Energize Bullet product (http://www.myspace.com/energizebullet)."

Deeply concerned that other unsuspecting consumers might be injured by this product tampering, Adele had his company immediately inspect and voluntarily recall all of the lots that could have been affected. These lot numbers were 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1794, all of which were sold in Canada. None of the affected products were sold in the United States.

"I felt personally betrayed. But I found myself most concerned with my customers' safety and well-being. Fortunately, no one was injured, but I needed peace of mind, so we didn't hesitate. Our actions were decisive, swift, and ultimately, the right thing to do. There is a full criminal investigation now taking place," Adele adds. "I was glad to learn that the person believed responsible for the tampering was not, and has never been, an iSatori employee. I also learned there was nothing iSatori could have done to prevent this product tampering."

Adele continues, "As a result of this experience, I've taken the time to learn how we, as customers of all types of consumable products--from energy drinks to chewing gum to a loaf of bread to… you name it--can help protect ourselves from potential tampering incidents. Here are four things we can do to help protect ourselves and our families:

1) Check your safety seals. It the safety seal is missing, broken, or damaged, do not consume the product.
2) Look for the lot and expiration dates on your products. Companies include that information, on the packaging, to help ensure your protection.
3) Don't purchase dented, opened, or obviously damaged packages.
4) Finally, if you have any doubts whatsoever about the product, please call the company directly. Their contact information--both web and telephone number--should be clearly marked on the packaging. (If it's not, that's another good indication not to purchase the product)."

To that end, and to ensure the ongoing safety of their customers, iSatori began putting a tamper-evident shrink wrap around their Hardcore Energize Bullet 6-pack display packages. "We feel this 'above and beyond' step can provide a way to make it more evident if someone has tampered with one of our products, while in transit or after being warehoused," comments Adele. He goes on to say, "while our safety track record has always been squeaky clean, we felt this was necessary to give us, and our consumers, another level of protection." Adele vows his company will continue to look for additional ways to ensure consumer protection.

"We may not be able to protect ourselves completely against untrustworthy people in the world, but we can take significant steps to reduce our risks," says Adele. "I am deeply sorry this incident occurred. I can't go back in time and erase it, but I am glad we acted swiftly to remedy the situation, and I can promise iSatori will keep striving to be the most trusted company in the nutritional supplement business."
