The ever-growing possibilities of designing with acrylic greeted visitors at the opening of the new City of Dreams resort and casino complex in Macau. There, a massive acrylic globe-shaped, illuminated water feature was unveiled that was manufactured by Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc. (RPT).
"This spherical water feature challenged us in several ways," said Roger Reynolds III, CEO of ICM. "We embraced those challenges and excelled in manufacturing a sphere that is as elegant and functional as it is large."
Contracted by sister company International Concept Management, Inc. (ICM), RPT engineered and manufactured the sphere to exact specifications. Exacting measurements and precise manufacturing were required in order for the sphere to function properly as a water fountain. Any surface that was not level would mean that water would not evenly spill out of the top hole of the sphere and down the sides. RPT ensured that the sphere was as perfect as possible when it came time for installation.
Because of the complexity of the sphere, a half-scale model was built before final, full-size manufacturing began. The half-scale model ensured proper engineering measurements and tested the water pump and filtration systems to ensure that the final, full size sphere was installed without a hitch.
The result is a highly polished clear sphere that measures eight feet in diameter (2.5m). A hole in the top of the sphere allows water to be pumped through the inside of the sphere and bubble out the top before gently cascading evenly down the sides of the globe into the catch pool below.
"The Sphere has become an iconic landmark in the City of Dreams," said JuliAnn Blam, Executive Vice President of Show Production for Falcon's Treehouse, LLC who was responsible for designing and producing themed concepts at the casino. "A visually striking element, it is now a well recognized photo-stop for guests from around the world. There have even been a number of fashion photographers who have used it as a dazzling backdrop to gorgeous models."
RPT carried out ICM's vision of ensuring the sphere was designed to allow for ease of maintenance for the client. In doing this, the hole at the top of the sphere is large enough that, when drained, allows a maintenance technician to be lowered into the sphere to clean the inside to maintain the clear visibility of the acrylic.
