While Americans are tightening budgets they find they actually have to loosen their belts. For many families more time working means less time meal planning. Fast food or quick to prepare foods become a staple for so many families who struggle to remain afloat. In order to save money and to eat healthy, American families need to think outside of the box--or outside of the grocery store shelves. However, to be healthy people to live in an Organic world of food choices. Maureen Jeanson, co-author of Squeaky Gourmet knows how hard it is to feed a family wholesome foods in today's tough economy. "We have a healthy vibrant brood of five children, and they all seem to demand meals consistently day to day." She advises heading to your local marketplace in the morning when the marked down produce, meats and dairy are put out--marked lower than generic food prices. Usually the products marked down are the high priced organic foods most people cannot fit into a family budget. Another place to look is at the same marketplace but at the marked down dry goods area. It is usually in the same spot in most markets, some place outback near an exit or by a shadowed portion of the store we don't normally travel in. Yet, you will surely find Jeanson there looking over the boxes and bottles for a deal she says will not pass up. "I have found organic cereal, sauces, dried fruits and even health and beauty aids marked down to almost 90% of the original asking price." she adds.

During the summer months in many communities' farm stands are readily offering their harvest at a fraction of the cost of the local grocery stores. Farming is still a mainstay in America so why not support local farmers and sustainable farm lands. Fresh off the farm produce is richer in nutrients than the produce which has been stored in large trucks in the hot sun waiting weeks to be delivered to the grocery store shelf. Fruits and vegetables allowed to ripen in the sun and are sold immediately after picking taste infinitely better and are much healthier.

Another way to save money while eating healthy is to look on the internet. Sites like Amazon are now offering organic groceries, since the site has no store front to maintain, savings are passed on to the consumer. Consumers are able to purchase bulk quantities of organic foods that would cost far more if you traveled to the market to buy them. Sites like Amazon also offer buyer incentives; subscribe and save. Also, check out the Friday Sale items which further decrease the costs.

A lot of Americans do not purchase basic whole and fresh food simply because they are not aware how easily they can be prepared. There are time saving recipes, bulk cooking tips and other time savings ideas for each and every healthy food item you buy. Books like Squeaky Gourmet Cookbook offer the reader ideas, tips and recipes for foods that are healthy but do not require hours of preparation and planning.
