Local Orthopedist, Dr. Houshang Seradge, was recently invited to present to the Forty First Congress of the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand. The Congress was held in Poznan, Poland in June and included world renowned Physicians from across Europe, Asia, and the United States. The European Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy is a non-profit organization representing 1800 therapists all over Europe and established for the purposes of sharing scientific experience and research with hand surgeons and allied professionals dealing with hand patients.

Seradge, founder of the Orthopedic Institute in Oklahoma City is among the world's leading hand specialists. He is recognized for his advances in non surgical treatment programs for preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and repetitive trauma disorders that affect not only workers and athletes but also hobbyists and homemakers.

"It was a great honor to present to some of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world," said Seradge. "It was also an incredible opportunity to share information about the new techniques and technologies that are now available for physicians when treating conditions that in the past challenged them."

Dr. Seradge lectured on three topics. He presented his Carpal Tunnel Decompression Exercises along with a study that showed significant reduction in workplace injuries and associated employer costs. An Oklahoma City plant with 250 employees experienced a fifty nine percent reduction of Repetitive Trauma Disorder (RTD) after implementing Dr. Seradge's decompression exercises. They have been used on five continents and their utilization continues to increase. The public can request an instructional brochure and workers in industrial settings can receive education free of charge.

Another presentation reviewed the fifteen-year follow up of Dynodesis, a procedure designed by Dr. Seradge in Oklahoma for the treatment of Dynamic Scaphoid Instability. This is a surgical procedure for treating a problem with a ligament in the wrist. The wrist has eight bones arranged in two rows and the scaphoid connects these two rows together. This study showed the effectiveness of the procedure as it provided long-term pain relief, improved grip strength and hand function in patients.

The human hand can make a fist and hold objects. This is because of flexor tendons that bend the fingers. Flexor tendons can be cut and when repaired they have a 20% failure rate on average. Dr Seradge designed a technique that does not require knots when using stitches to repair the cut tendon. The long term result of this technique has been excellent as patients were able to start active finger movement the first day after surgery. Dr Seradge presented this technique to the hand surgeons of other countries for their use. The technique has been published and named the "The Oklahoma Repair Technique" by Dr. Seradge in honor of this great state.

Dr. Seradge has published 63 articles and given 120 lectures across the United States and internationally. Dr. Seradge is one of our local Physicians keeping Oklahoma City in the forefront of medical advances.
