This month incoming Chapter President Jayne Alford-Melchinger, CFP™, CLU, CHFC (Canada) accepted the reins of leadership passed surely by Leslie G. Johnson, CFP™, CLU, ChFC, MBA, 2008-2009 President of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Society of FSP™.
Since 1958, the Tampa Bay Chapter has existed "to advance the professionalism of credentialed members in diverse disciplines so that they may better serve their clients' financial needs." Now 151 members strong and growing, this chapter comprises credentialed brokers, agents, lawyers, accountants. Regular Chapter meetings foster a commitment to high standards with consistently good programs of timely speakers, case studies and new information on changing financial laws..
Jayne Alford-Melchinger's theme for the coming year is "Partnering--We all benefit when you belong." Jayne is particularly excited about attracting new members from several professions who regularly deal with peoples' finances. Such a group can become a professional home fpr practitioners who identify with a set of core values, beliefs and the opportunity for learning and growth. Awareness makes opportunity visible and this new president wants to create professional awareness at a continually high level and to foster peer to peer collaboration.
A 50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner marked a turning point in chapter growth. Over 100 legal and financial professionals attended. Rod Hansen, CFP™, CLU, ChFC, National President SFSP, spoke about the history and growth of the Society, the great contributions of the Tampa Bay Chapter, and the issues that will demand the attention of all members in the coming years of personal financial uncertainty. Gary Froid, CFP™, CLU, ChFC, RHU, National Past President SFSP, flew in from Maine to address the group. He related with wit and wisdom the early days, how he came to be a life insurance agent, and his perspective on the life of a professional in a rapidly changing environment.
Starting out in 1959 with 20 members, Tampa has hosted a National Convention and, for the past five years, the Chapter's own Financial Services Expo in which members from the Financial Planning Association (FPA), Tampa Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (TAIFA) and the Society of Financial Service Professionals (SFSP) join together to provide a high level educational day for their members.
