Website improvements and search engine optimization help the OIG to better promote their mission.

The Department of the Interior Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has started working with Washington D.C. web design firm, Blue Water Media, to update and improve their website and develop their overall internet presence. Blue Water Media will provide a comprehensive set of recommendations for the OIG including interactive website design and development, ongoing site maintenance and support, and search engine optimization. Their efforts will enable the OIG to better achieve their aim to ensure the management, operations, and programs of the Department of the Interior adhere to a standard of excellence, accountability, and integrity. The campaign is scheduled to run from July-October 2009.

The web-optimization process will begin with a needs assessment to identify objectives, evaluate existing program assets, and develop an implementation strategy. After goals have been clarified, Blue Water Media will construct an appropriate basic site design and navigation structure and offer various homepage design concepts. Once a basic layout has been decided upon, various physical features of the website will be altered to give users the best possible visual experience. Changes will include a higher screen resolution, the elimination of the current horizontal scroll option, and the implementation of a three column content design for the homepage.

Blue Water Media will add numerous features to make the new site as easy to use for the OIG staff as it will be for site visitors. Blue Water Media will employ a content management system to enable the OIG to easily add new pages and update the site independently. This ability will create a reputation for the website as a top-notch and comprehensive information resource. Blue Water Media will also provide email newsletter management for mass-email delivery. By streamlining the OIG's E-newsletter process, they will be able to more easily spread their message. The OIG will additionally get unlimited access to the Blue Water Media helpdesk system in order to track progress made on the site, as well as phone support to ensure they receive the exceptional customer service Blue Water Media is known for. Finally, Blue Water Media will conduct periodic traffic analysis and member surveys to gain feedback about the website's effectiveness. This critical information will enable staff members to make necessary improvements to ensure that the site performs to its maximum potential.

In addition to website design and development, a major component of Blue Water Media's work will be to develop the OIG's internet marketing campaign using search engine optimization (SEO). The numerous benefits of SEO include homepage submission to the top search engines for 12 months, sub-page and continuing optimization, and keyword analysis and strategy. These efforts will improve the site's rank in various search engines thereby amplifying the OIG's overall web presence. Blue Water Media will further strengthen the internet optimization by designing the site to be Section 508 and W3c compliant--meaning users with disabilities will be able to employ assistive technologies when visiting the site. This not only increases the site's overall ranking in major search engines such as Yahoo and Google, but it makes it easier for all website visitors to navigate broadening the audience the site is able to reach.

Blue Water Media is thrilled to partner with the Department of the Interior Office of the Inspector General on this exciting new project and is committed to providing the best internet development campaign possible.
