Hundreds of British holidaymakers could not only be banned from setting off on their summer vacations but could also lose the total cost of their holiday after it emerged that many travel insurance companies are refusing to pay out for swine flu related travel cancellations.
British Airways recently indicated that they will be testing customers planning to travel for
swine flu related symptoms at airport check-in desks over the next few months. This is when the pandemic is forecast to be at its worst, customers appearing to show typical symptoms such as shortness of breath, a hacking cough or a runny nose will be refused boarding and told to contact their doctor for written confirmation. The written confirmation is needed by your travel insurance for swine flu related payouts, but with many angry insurers refusing to foot the bill for the airline's new legislation it is thought that many holidaymakers could lose out.
However, Patrick Chong, the Managing Director of InsureMore, has promised that their insurance cover will pay out for swine flu related travel cancellations: "Our policy is that we will provide cancellation cover for any holidaymakers who are in receipt of a written letter from their doctor stating that they cannot travel because of swine flu".
But whilst InsureMore have stated that they won't be offering cover for tourists who don't wish to travel due to a heightened fear of contracting the H5N1 virus, holidaymakers who are unfortunate enough to contract the illness abroad will be covered under the travel insurance's swine flu regulations. The medical cover within InsureMore's policy will also be extended, in the event of the policyholder contracting swine flu whilst travelling, to include cover for quarantine as well as return flights to the United Kingdom.
If you are worried that you may not be allowed to travel due to the effects of swine flu then InsureMore urges that your first step should be contacting your tour operator or airline. Many holiday providers are committed to working with their customers to amend their bookings free of charge or promise to offer a full refund for cancelled holidays.
