This summer sees not one, but three new websites from Mike Federali. Dirty Dove Records, http://www.dirtydoverecords.com is his own label. Sonic Boom Direct, http://www.sonicboomdirect.com to get new music directly into the hands of radio and A&R for less than the cost of a stamp. And finally, iBandBattle, http://www.ibandbattle.com offers free exposure and prizes to bands in all genres and from all countries.
Mike Federali began these sites in hopes of filling what he called "A massive, growing hole in the music industry".
He continued, "Everyone thinks bands have it better now than in years past, but that's ridiculous. Just the sheer number of bands that exist today mean your chances of making it are worse than getting winning the lottery or being hit by lightning. It's unfair that so much music doesn't make it to the rest of the world. Everyone complains about it, but I'm determined to make an actual change".
Sonic Boom Direct began as a direct response to Mike Federali seeing so many bands taken advantage of by sampler companies. Unlike most music samplers that sometimes cost bands into the thousands, Sonic Boom Direct has broken the cost down to the bare minimum. The simple truth is, the average band is broke and can't afford to mail out a few thousand copies of their new single and needed a better option.
Dirty Dove Records seems like the "anti-label". Where most labels are out to promote a handful of artists with large advertising and recording budgets, Dirty Dove is getting their music out their through free samplers, a return to split eps, and a focus on their bands working together instead of just being in it for themselves.
Not wanting to leave anyone out, Mike Federali started iBandBattle. An online battle of the bands with a twist. Typically, a battle of the bands in a small town will be three or four acts and only the venue makes money. The twist here? Bands promote themselves for prizes ranging from exposure on an iTunes podcast to prizes from Indie Bible, Tunecore and more. Even if a band loses one week, they are still out their promoting themselves and gaining new listeners. Even if they lose, they win.
When asked about the sponsorships for iBandBattle, Federali could not be happier.
"We're gaining more and more sponsors every day and were especially pleased with Indie Bible, SongU and Tunecore. Tunecore is offering free distribution to one monthly winner which is exactly the kind of encouragement and help these new bands need".
