The winners of the 2009 SourceForge Community Choice Awards have been announced and PortableApps.com is the big winner. PortableApps.com swept 4 of the 12 categories in the annual open source awards including Best Project which saw nearly 5,000 projects nominated for awards. PortableApps.com then experienced its 100 millionth portable software download from their website, securing their status as the world's most popular portable software platform.
In addition to Best Project, PortableApps.com also won Best Commercial Open Source Project, Best Visual Design and Most Likely to Change the Way You Do Everything. Nearly 185,000 people voted in the annual awards, the largest total to date. The winners were announced at the annual Open Source Convention in San Jose, CA at a party and awards ceremony sponsored by SourceForge.
The 100 millionth download of a 'portable app', a portable package of a desktop software program that can be used on any computer without installing it, occurred soon after the awards show. To date, millions of users worldwide have downloaded their favorite web browsers, email clients, image editors, media players, instant messaging clients, games, educational software and development tools to their USB flash drives and used them at work, school, home and on the road.
