Protecting Your Critical Data - an Introduction to ISO 27001 - presented by John Verry of Pivot Point Security, Hamilton NJ, to the Philadelphia chapter of the CSO Breakfast Club. An insightful presentation to help CSOs find a roadmap to navigate new regulations, increasing threats and new communication (social media) modalities.

On July 23, 2009, John Verry (CISA), Principal Enterprise Security Consultant at Pivot Point Security (Hamilton, NJ), spoke to a group of senior Information Technology professionals from several industries, including healthcare, at the CSO Breakfast Club Event held in Philadelphia PA.

The topic "Data Protection" was chosen specifically by the CSO Breakfast Club's founder, William Sieglein, "to focus on the challenges our executive members face in trying to decide what data requires protection, where that data resides and how best to protect that data in a cost-effective manner."

John Verry took a fresh approach to the topic, and focused his remarks primarily on ISO 27001, the only measurable standard for security information. "CSOs face ever increasing regulation (new state provisions for PII, HIPAA and HITECH in the healthcare industry, PCI and DSS, Sarbanes, NERC) - and compliance issues have grown tremendously." In addition, Verry said "Cloud computing, increasing numbers of tele-employees, industrial espionage and the rise of social networking complicates security matters even further." Citing that short of divine intervention, there is no "silver bullet" for data protection, Verry delineated the need for a "road map" to determine which point solutions, and which standards are best applied to every situation.

Verry sees that "road map" in ISO 27001 - and went on to explain to his audience that "ISO-27001 is rapidly becoming the de-facto standard for Information Security attestation." Following the guidelines and principles of ISO 27001 leads to "initiating, implementing, maintaining, and improving Information Security," said Verry, citing the accelerated adoption rate of 5K+ in the last few years.

Verry then outlined the benefits from a CSO perspective:
1) ISO 27001 is a certifiable standard (you can prove you are secure to a known set of criteria)
2) It simplifies information security into an overarching process (27001) and best practices (27002)
In addition, Verry stated: "ISO 27001 simplifies communication with management and partners, is applicable to all risks and all compliance requirements, and can be harmonized with COBIT, ITIL, OWASP, OSTMM, NIST, etc."

Verry concluded that "27001(2) provides a structured approach proven over 10+ years across thousands of organizations. Most importantly, getting started with 27001 can be simple as it is largely comprised of activities with which you are already familiar."
