Aside from advocating for the environment, Ameenah Lutfee owner of Pearl River, a start-up, upscale resale and consignment boutique, want to make a difference in helping those who have been a victim of job loss. With the employment rate reaching double digits in Oakland, she is offering to anyone who is recently unemployed, a 25% discount off their purchase.

We're committed to bringing real value to the Bay Area community with great merchandise, classes and other resources, while discounting purchases for the unemployed customer

The idea came to her when a prospective customer wanted to make a seemingly nominal purchase of an office chair for her home office. At the time of the purchase the customer asked Lutfee if she would be willing to further discount the chair. While entertaining the request, Lutfee queried the customer. The customer quietly confided that she had been recently laid off from her job and that her finances were quite meager. The customer went on to say that she needed the chair badly because her current well-worn chair caused her severe discomfort. From that conversation, Lutfee began to pay attention as the ranks of the unemployed in Oakland swell. Although Pearl River is a newly established business, she knew she wanted to make a difference by acknowledging and supporting those who have suffered recent job loss; as a result, she conceived the idea of offering a discount to her unemployed customers.
