The Ashland Daily Tidings' Web site won first place in its division in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association's 2009 Better Newspaper Contest.

The Ashland Daily Tidings' Web site won first place in its division in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association's 2009 Better Newspaper Contest.

Competing against other Oregon daily newspapers with a circulation of 10,000 or less, the Tidings won two first places, four second places and four third places.

In addition to winning in the Best Web Site category, the Tidings also took first place for Best Page One Design.

"I'm extremely proud of the Tidings staff," Tidings City Editor Myles Murphy said. "Each person here has worked extremely hard, and it's great to see that recognized. The award for best web site is particularly heartening, since that's an area we've all been focused on."

Ashland's newspaper won second in the Best Special Section or Issue category for its 2008 Shakespeare publication, designed by Mike Oxendine.

The Tidings took second for Best Editorial Page (at the time managed by now-Web Editor Mike Green), Best Religion Coverage (Julie French) and Best Sports Story (Joe Zavala).

Sports Editor Zavala also garnered a third place for Best Sports Story and a third place for Best Sports Page.

The Tidings won third place in Best Coverage of Business and Economic Issues for last July's "Dealing with the Downturn" series, written by Vickie Aldous, Julie French, Michele Mihalovich.

Staff writer Vickie Aldous also won third place in the Best Local column category for "Quills and Queues," a weekly column on the Tidings' backpage that she alternates writing with Tidings correspondent Angela Howe-Decker.
