Blue Ridge Networks Plugs Security Holes in Evolving U.S. Grid Infrastructure

Computer and network security products protect facilities from cyberattacks using secure communications appliances and PC security policy enforcement.

For over 12 years Blue Ridge Networks has been delivering secure communications products and services to government and commercial clients with no reported vulnerabilities

Articles this year in the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal are reminders of the security issues that continue to plague the U.S. electrical grid. Referring to the grid, a former Department of Homeland Security official said, "There are intrusions, and they are growing. There were a lot last year." In addition to vulnerabilities in the networks, cyberattacks can also be launched by taking advantage of well-known security gaps in common PC applications.

"For over 12 years Blue Ridge Networks has been delivering secure communications products and services to government and commercial clients with no reported vulnerabilities," stated Mike Fumai, CEO of Blue Ridge Networks. "And with new releases of our AppGuard and EdgeGuard products over the last year, customers are assured that their desktops will be safe from 0-day malware attacks and organizational security policies will be enforced."

Blue Ridge/Secure Virtual Ethernet Service is a comprehensive secure communications service delivering virtual private network connectivity to highly distributed enterprises and their business continuity sites over wired, wireless and satellite networks. The service combines end-to-end coordinated ordering, 24x7x365 end-user help desk, and provisioning with a pro-active trouble alert and maintenance system.

Consisting of BorderGuard hub appliances and RemoteLink distributed appliances, the network acts like an Ethernet extension cord and is 100% compatible with Ethernet based equipment typically found in power generating facilities, including PCs, Laptops, Servers, Routers, VoIP phones, and SCADA systems. The service operates over any commercially available network that delivers DSL, Cable modem, cellular, or T1 connections.

Third-party tests simulating DDoS attacks on BorderGuard appliances showed the BorderGuard continued to operate while under attack and equally important was able to provide audit data to the management platform showing the attack. Unlike most other VPN systems, the SVES management plane is not a single point of failure for the system and therefore is not impacted by DDoS attacks.

Blue Ridge/Secure AppGuard is a "set and forget" solution that blocks malware attacks without any configuration by the end-user. It protects computers by guarding the applications that run on them instead of comparing every inbound file or communication to an endless list of known malware, using unreliable heuristics, and without prompting users to make security decisions. Anti-virus/spyware products effectively stop old malware. Adding AppGuard increases a computer's protection to over 90% by stopping new malware.

Blue Ridge/Secure EdgeGuard is a policy-based security solution that enforces security policies regardless of the PCs location. It can prevent the user from running unapproved software and quarantine the PC from the network until its anti-virus software, or other programs including disk encryption and VPN, are up-to-date. EdgeGuard also enables custom policy assessment and enforcement scripting.

The technology employed by AppGuard and EdgeGuard does not rely on having malware signatures. Instead, it places applications such as Internet Explorer 'under guard' to prevent attackers from forcing applications to execute malicious code. Additionally, AppGuard and EdgeGuard stop unknown software that attempts to launch from "My Documents", "Desktop", additional hard drives, and "user space". Likewise, AppGuard and EdgeGuard prevent malware hidden on a USB device from attacking the computer it's plugged into.
