Eastern University is moving its city programs, including the new partnership Academy Charter School, to the Falls Center located at 3300 Henry Avenue in Philadelphia, PA. Housed for the past decade at 10th and Spring Garden Streets, the Urban Studies Masters Degree program, the Cross Boundaries College for Young Professionals, and Community Education programs will benefit from the new facility.
Eastern University's Falls Center will provide classrooms, space for student activities, and administrative offices for the urban studies programs and Academy Charter School. "Our enrollment is expanding, so this new space will accommodate those students and faculty and also provide space for our community development students to begin incubator programs," said Dr. K-lee Johnson, Director of Urban Studies and Youth Leadership.
Eastern has partnered with the Big Picture Company, the Gates Foundation affiliate Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, and the Black Alliance for Educational Options to open the Academy Charter School, which would provide a unique opportunity for any school, let alone a Philadelphia Christian University . Starting in September, the school will not only offer programs tailored to students interests, but also up to 60 college credits by the time they graduate. "We are elated. It's been a long time coming for Eastern," said Yvonne Turner, Director of the Early College High School Program at Eastern University.
A Philadelphia Christian University, Eastern has made a commitment to urban education programs and this move strengthens its presence in the city of Philadelphia. This presence now includes The Falls Center; the People for People Institute, a partnership between Eastern University and People for People Inc. and Esperanza College serving the Latino community in Philadelphia.
Falls Center is located near the intersection of Routes 1 and I-76, on12 beautifully landscaped acres offering panoramic views of the city. With parking for 1,100 vehicles, Falls Center is one of the most convenient facilities among Philadelphia colleges and was previously home to the historic Medical College of Pennsylvania.
