What the heck, I will give him a few things to do and see how he does.

For the second year in a row the Father and son Internet marketing team of Don Willis, Director of Marketing for Storage West Self Storage, and his Webmaster son Adam Willis, who were brought together because of a heart attack, have made the short list of finalists for the annual Search Engine Watch Awards for the Best Use of Local Search. Winners will be announced at Search Engine Strategies 2009 San Jose, August 10-14.

It took a heart attack and emergency by-pass surgery to bring these two time Best Use of Local Search Award finalists together.

Long before Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for local search became a standard marketing practice in the self-storage industry, Storage West Self Storage, a regional self-storage company with 44 storage facilities in California, Arizona and Nevada, was integrating it into its business strategy.

Since 1999 all of Storage West's pioneering SEO programs have been developed in-house by Don Willis, with the help, over the years, of various part time webmasters. Shortly after his heart attack and emergency 6 by-pass surgery in November 2007, his son Adam Willis became his webmaster; he thinks that's pretty cool, and literally a life saver.

As Don was home recovering from his emergency by-pass surgery he was complaining to his son Adam of all the web work and search engine optimization work that wasn't getting done. Adam informed his dad that he had been interested in web site development and had played around with web design. Don thought "What the heck, I will give him a few things to do and see how he does." To Don's very pleasant surprise and amazement, Adam's work was the best he had seen since launching http://www.storagewest.com. As Don thought back to that day, he remembered happily thinking "Who knew!" The Internet marketing team of Don and Adam was born.

Don recalled that "Anytime you look death in the eye and survive you do a lot of soul searching about how you are living your life". Don realized that he needed to reduce stress as part of his healing process. A major source of self-imposed stress was keeping on top of his Local Search goals and programs. "Being able to give a lot of this work to my son was a major stress reducer, a very good thing for my heart", Don observed.

Don went on to say "Over the years I, like most that work with web marketing, developed a lot of strategies that I consider top secret. Being able to freely share these tricks of the trade with my son and have him implement them was a major stress reducer."

As Adam looked back to the day of his dad's heart attack and surgery he said, "I was really scared that my dad was going to die and to now be working with him doing what I love makes it pretty cool." He went on to say, "To be honored by the Search Engine Watch Awards and Search Engine Strategies San Jose 2009 by making the finalists for the second straight year is very special and gratifying".

Whether they win or lose the Award for Best Use of Local Search, Don and Adam think they are both winners already because they get to work together doing what they love. They will be attending Search Engine Strategies San Jose 2009 together.
