Zürich/Zug, Switzerland (PRWEB) August 7, 2009
The Canton of Zug is the latest member of the Greater Zurich Area AG, the Department for Economy of the Canton of Zug and the economic promotion agency Greater Zurich Area AG announced today. Zug is sharing in the worldwide location marketing activities of Greater Zurich Area AG, joining the Swiss Cantons of Aargau, Glarus, Graubünden (Grisons), Schaffhausen, Schwyz, Solothurn, and Zürich, as well as the cities of Zürich and Winterthur. The membership takes effect retroactively 1st July 2009.
The Swiss Canton of Zug, with its main cities of Zug and Baar, has been an important foreign direct investment destination for many years. Just a little more than half an hour's drive to the South of the city of Zürich, Zug has managed to attract numerous international headquarters and finance companies. Today the Canton of Zug is as much a hotbed for biotechnology - hosting industry pioneers such as Amgen and Biogen Idec - as for commodity trading companies such as Glencore, Xstrata and Taloca and other high-tech companies such as Siemens Building Technologies and Roche Diagnostics.
The Greater Zurich Area is Switzerland's economic engine and a central business location for Europe. Its internationally renowned research and education institutes and their close ties to the business community have established the Greater Zurich Area as a location of choice for future-oriented industries from IT and nanotech to life sciences and green/clean-tech. The Greater Zurich Area is a world-renowned financial center and a highly sought-after location for industries focused on knowledge and value creation. A large number of acclaimed international companies, such as Cisco Systems, Dow, Ecolab, Google, John Deere, IBM, Kraft Foods, Microsoft and Kühne & Nagel, have chosen the Greater Zurich Area as the place to bundle important corporate EMEA and global operations including holding functions, intellectual property management, Finance and Supply Chain Management, and R&D.
Willi Meier, CEO of Greater Zurich Area AG: "I warmly welcome the Canton of Zug to the Greater Zurich Area. Their decision to join forces with the Greater Zurich Area AG is the consequence of already excellent and close relations between neighbors in geography and ideas. Zug's experience, success and support in international location marketing under the "Greater Zurich Area" brand will be greatly beneficial for the entire region and further strengthen our joint impact abroad."
Matthias Michel, Minister of Economy of the Canton of Zug: "The region around Zurich has grown much closer together in the last few years - economically and politically. In light of an ever intensifying international competition among the most attractive company locations, bundling international location marketing activities under a common brand is the right thing to do. We will be able to benefit from the Greater Zurich Area AG's existing outreach and extensive network abroad, while leveraging our own experience and strength."
