Lucy's Pillows, a Los Angeles based niche manufacturer and online retailer of handmade throw pillows, has launched a new promotion to give $1 from every order received in August to the local dog rescue organization Dogs Without Borders. The campaign is part of the company's commitment to supporting groups and nonprofits that improve the community.

Because we're a family-run business, we feel a strong connection to the community in which we live and operate. There are so many organizations working to improve Los Angeles and the lives of people who live here, but with the economy suffering, many of them are struggling to stay afloat - especially animal welfare groups

Lucy's Pillows, a Los Angeles based company that makes and sells contemporary decorative pillows through its website LucysPillows.com, has announced plans to donate $1 from every purchase made during the month of August to the local dog rescue organization Dogs Without Borders (http://www.DogsWithoutBorders.org). The promotion aims to provide much-needed funds for the group's efforts to find new families for abandoned dogs and coincides with the 6-month adoption anniversary of a dog that inspired the company's name.

"Because we're a family-run business, we feel a strong connection to the community in which we live and operate. There are so many organizations working to improve Los Angeles and the lives of people who live here, but with the economy suffering, many of them are struggling to stay afloat - especially animal welfare groups," said Lucy's Pillows founder Danielle Mead. "When we came up with the idea of donating a portion of every order to a local nonprofit, Dogs Without Borders was the first group that came to mind because it's where we found our dog, Lucy."

According to the Los Angeles Animal Services 2008 Statistical Report, more than fifty thousand dogs and cats were taken in by the city's shelters last year, a 20.5% increase over the previous year that the department partially attributes to the economic downturn. Though more than nineteen thousand dogs and cats were euthanized in 2008, Animal Services successfully found homes for more than twenty thousand animals through direct adoptions and over five thousand animals through their New Hope partnership program, which works with animal welfare organizations like Dogs Without Borders.

Lucy's Pillows plans to expand their philanthropic efforts to additional types of organizations based on customer feedback. "Ideally we'd like to get our customers involved and find out what groups they'd like us to help," Mead said. "California's budget crisis has resulted in devastating cuts to many services that support our communities, and often times our customers have first-hand experience with the organizations that are stepping in to fill those financial gaps."
