Despite the national economic downturn, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series participation has continued to grow at a record level

The Active Network, Inc. (Active), a leading provider of application services technology and marketing solutions for community service and participatory sports organizations, today announced its findings of online registration for running events taking place in the United States during the first half of the 2009.

The Active Network is the largest provider of online registration for endurance events and organizations, including thousands of running events annually. Results of registrations processed through Active show that despite challenging economic conditions in the first half of the year, people continue to register for running events in record numbers.

  • The number of people registered to participate in running events held from January through June 2009 increased 14.42 percent from the same time period in 2008.
  • Average growth in online registration for running events was 20 percent.
  • Over 70 percent of running events in the first half of the 2009 experienced growth in online registration over the previous year.

"Despite the national economic downturn, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series participation has continued to grow at a record level," said Scott Dickey, COO of the Competitor Group. "Active's online registration allows our participants to sign up for events with the click of a button, making it easier than ever to be one of the 300,000 people running Rock 'n' Roll Marathons next year."

The findings, compiled from online registrations processes by Active's ActiveEndurance division (http://www.activeendurance.com), compared online registration for running events held in both 2008 and 2009 during the months of January through June.

The increase in running event registration supports a recent survey conducted on Active.com, an award-winning online community for people who want to discover, learn about, share and ultimately participate in activities about which they are passionate. The survey found that more than 90 percent of casual and committed runners and walkers planned to participate in at least one running or walking event in the next 12 months.
