In 2007, Susan and Jim Ralston received the news every parent dreads: their 2-year-old son was diagnosed with a spinal Ewing's sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. This heart-breaking report was followed by a discovery from relatives that offered some comfort and hope: a relatively new treatment, proton therapy. The Ralstons began a quest for more information and learned proton therapy could help their son improve his odds of beating cancer. As a result of this first-hand experience and months of research, the Ralstons launched the Pediatric Proton Foundation in May 2009.

This August 22nd will mark the first official public benefit for the Pediatric Proton Foundation since its inception. The local owners of the Smokehouse and Cooler restaurant (2957 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach) have known the Ralston family as customers for many years. They are now the first local company to step forward and offer to sponsor a benefit party in honor of Jacob to benefit the foundation. The common element besides a love for Jacob is the love for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This tailgate event will held prior to the early season match between the local favorite's Washington Redskins against the Championship Pittsburgh Steelers. Jacob's tailgate party will be held 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and will offer donating guests ($25) a buffet of burgh favorites and discounted beverages.
