The Arizona real estate market is showing some signs of recovery and many first time homebuyers want to take advantage of the $8,000 first time home buyer credit before the December 1, 2009 deadline. Smart homebuyers are looking for houses with durability--and what is more durable than stone? Brent Davis of Stone Touch, a Scottsdale service contractor that specializes in the treatment of natural stone, said many customers ask him if they should purchase a home with stone floors or fixtures.
"I tell them "yes!" Davis said. "Look at the pyramids of Egypt and the castles of Europe. Those stone structures have withstood centuries of weather and are still beautiful."
Davis cautions homeowners that while daily care of stone floors is easy, long term maintenance will keep them beautiful.
"Moisture is one of the biggest challenges when caring for stone floors," Davis said. "You get too much moisture and certain stones will erode or even stain, depending on what the liquid is."
Davis recommends sealing, a process that will keep moisture from being absorbed. Several types of sealers are available, including a color enhancer which can be used on certain stones to bring out their natural beauty. Davis said he expects to be busier as more home buyers want to know about the floors in their new homes and home sellers spruce up their homes before putting them on the market.
"Before we seal a floor or do any type of stone floor cleaning, we visit the site," Davis said. "It's important to know what kind of stone is there, the condition of the floors and the goals of the homeowner. Our on-site estimates are free so that we can give our customers an accurate picture of what needs to be done."
