Home health care company in Detroit growing despite the tough economy; Family owned Detroit business sees elder care opportunities

Just two months after moving into new offices, the Visiting Angels franchise in Detroit ( is continuing to grow its elder care business, this time by expanding into Oakland County from its base in Wayne County.

"Despite doing business in a region that has been hit very hard by the recession, this week we were able to expand the protected territory of our home care business so that it now includes Oak Park, Mich.," said Joyce K. Stallings, Director of Services, Visiting Angels of Detroit. Visiting Angels caregivers make it possible for the elderly and convalescing adults to remain in their homes instead of being placed in a nursing home or other facility. Experienced Visiting Angels caregivers provide a wide range of non-medical services, including personal hygiene assistance, light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders, companionship, etc.

The Detroit franchise of Visiting Angels had the option to expand its geographic territory by purchasing the rights to market its home care services in neighborhoods that adjoin its existing protected territory in Detroit.

"While we could have purchased more territory in Detroit, we think it is important to seek new opportunities outside of the city that will prepare us for the economic recovery that we hope will begin next year," Stallings said. "Besides, just like the rest of the country, this entire region is experiencing an increase in the number of elderly residents."

Visiting Angels of Detroit moved its offices to 11000 W. McNichols, Suite 215, on June 1, 2009. The phone number is 313.272.9401.

"In April we became eligible to provide home care services to Medicaid recipients," Stallings said. "That means that more people in the Detroit area who need care will be able to afford our in-home services."

"This is a family owned franchise business," Stallings added. "We were all born in Detroit and we're committed to serving the community by providing this very important service to elderly and convalescing adults who want to stay in their homes. Just as important, Visiting Angles eases the burden for family members struggling to care for loved ones."

The next major project for Visiting Angels of Detroit is an update of their Web site. "We expect to enhance our marketing efforts when we launch the bigger and better Web site around September 1," Stallings said.

Stallings' Visiting Angels franchise is the only one authorized to operate in Detroit.
