Valparaiso University to Create the Only Online Master of Arts in Chinese Studies Program in the U.S.

When Valparaiso University decided to launch a portion of their Master of Arts in Chinese Studies program online, they sought assistance from the Learning House, Inc., a comprehensive online education company that assists colleges and universities across the United States in launching degree programs, certificates and licenses. Learning House has seen substantial growth in its industry segment for the first half of 2009, having added 12 new schools since January 2009 and experiencing a 22% increase in the company's revenue.

Valparaiso University officials agreed that it was time to offer the Master of Arts in Chinese Studies degree online due to the increased demand from middle and high-school teachers not only in the Valparaiso, Indiana region, but from teachers across the country. Valparaiso's Chinese Studies program includes a requirement of spending two summers at their study center in China, in addition to the online classes, and is set to launch in the spring 2010 session.

"Valparaiso has a very strong Chinese Studies program and administrators are thrilled to be able to now make it more accessible to K-12 teachers of Chinese language," said David Rowland, Dean of the Graduate School at Valparaiso University. "We would not have been able to do this without assistance from the Learning House."

In partnership with Learning House, Valparaiso University will also offer a hybrid format of its Doctor of Nursing Practice program with many classes available online starting this fall. "We have already had tremendous interest from many practicing nurses who want to attain this higher education, but because they also hold full-time jobs, are not able to attend classes on campus," continued Rowland.

Several factors contributing to more traditional and non-traditional students seeking higher education include increased transportation costs (driving to and from the traditional campus) as well as new educational attainment goals due to unemployment. Likewise, students with busy work and family schedules have also contributed to the rise in online education.

As an example, California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California has seen a tremendous increase in online enrollments after offering online programs for only a year. The university saw a 74% increase in their online MBA degree program in Financial Planning and online Certificate in Financial Planning from the fall 2008 to spring 2009 semesters.
By year's end, the total enrollments from Learning House partner schools are expected to increase by 43% from the previous year.
