Inc Magazine released their annual Inc 500 list of the nation's fastest-growing businesses on Wednesday, August 12. One self-publishing company, categorized in the Consumer Products & Services category, made the top 500 -- Outskirts Press.
The annual ranking is based upon the rate of each company's revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. In that span of time, Outskirts Press grew at a rate of 850.5%, making it the fastest growing self-publishing and book marketing company and #268 among all American businesses. Outskirts Press is the 21st fastest-growing business in the Consumer Products & Services category.
"As an Inc. 500 honoree, Outskirts Press shares a prestigious pedigree with such notable alumni as Intuit, GoDaddy, Under Armour, Jamba Juice, Timberland, Clif Bar, Microsoft, Patagonia, American Apparel, Oracle, and scores of other powerhouses," according to Jane Berentson, Inc. Magazine's editor.
This announcement comes on the heels of the Denver Business Journal finding Outskirts Press to be the 7th fastest-growing privately held company in Denver within the small-to-medium category for 2009. In 2008, Outskirts Press was the #1 fastest-growing company in their category and in 2007, number 3. Founded in 2002, Outskirts Press currently has over 4,500 books published and available worldwide through online book retailers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
With mainstream writers like Stephen Covey recently going the self-publishing route, self-publishing continues its ascent toward the preferred publishing method. In fact, last year the sales of self-published books climbed 132% while the sales of traditionally published books fell by 3%.
