In less than 2 weeks all operators of powered boats in Canada will require a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. The final deadline for 8 million Canadian boaters is September 15, 2009. Boaters caught without the card after the deadline will be subject to a fine of $250.00.

The Pleasure Craft Operator Card is available from BOATsmart! Canada - a boating education provider accredited by Transport Canada.

The organization also offers a network of certified test locations across Canada. BOATsmart! Canada's Safe Boating Teams will also be visiting various locations across Canada in September offering the exam risk free. Boaters must complete a 36 question written exam in order to obtain the card. A minimum passing grade of 75% is required. Topics on the exam include navigation rules, marker buoys, required safety equipment and emergency preparedness. Once obtained, the BOATsmart! Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is good for life.

The law applies to all recreational boaters who operate powered vessels. There are no exemptions for age or length of boat.

Boaters who have lost or misplaced their Operator Card can contact BOATsmart! Canada's Infoline at 1-877-792-392, open 7 days per week, to access the organization's national database and obtain a replacement card.
