"GALA 2009: The language of business. The business of language." conference to focus on education, networking and building profits in a tough economy

The first annual "GALA 2009: The language of business. The business of language." conference is hosted by the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA), an international non-profit association of companies providing translation, internationalization, localization and globalization products and services.

GALA 2009 will be held 14 - 16 September 2009 at the J.W. Marriott in Cancun, Mexico and will provide GALA members and industry professionals with language technology education, training and networking opportunities unparalleled in the localization and translation industry. Attendees will discuss heady topics, such as the state of the industry and the future of vendor management, and will be educated on technologies and processes that are fundamentally changing the language business.

"The recession as well as technology advancements are rapidly changing the language and localization industry. Issues such as crowdsourcing translation and advanced machine translation are putting pressures on pricing and quality," said James F. Hollan III, executive director of GALA. "GALA 2009 includes a content-rich program that looks at these issues in more depth than any previous language or localization industry.

The program kicks off with a keynote by the founder and chairman of Craigslist, Craig Newmark. He will discuss the future of online community and commerce. The conference also will feature Hewlett Packard executive, Jean-Luc Mazet, who will hold a buyer-side session, discussing the challenges that language service providers face in trying to work with HP and other major localization buyers. In an industry plenary, hosted by Don DePalma of Common Sense Advisory, the leaders of all major language associations (GALA, LISA, LRC, ATA and tekom) will share the stage for the first time to discuss the state of the industry. Vendor management will be the topic of a roundtable with executives from Adobe, VMware, VeriSign, Moravia and Lionbridge. Technology will be the subject for Shelly Priebe, president of McElroy Translation who will discuss crowdsourcing as a competitive advantage rather than a threat, and for Hans Fenstermacher, TransPerfect/, who will hold a point/counterpoint panel on workflow, integrated management systems, and big picture questions on language technology. The entire program can be viewed here.

GALA 2009 will include many opportunities for networking, holding a welcome reception and its ever-popular informal speed networking. Additionally, GALA 2009 Gold Sponsor Alchemy Software Development will give one professional edition of Alchemy Publisher to all participating companies. Alchemy PUBLISHER 2.0 is advanced translation memory for documentation and technical publication.
