Speaking at the launch, Emelyn Heaps, Aran Islands Treasure Hunt organsier said: "We believe this treasure hunt will help raise further awareness of the Aran Islands as a year-round tourist location, in a more fun and non-traditional way. We are hoping subsequently to drive more visitor traffic to the Islands, especially during off-peak periods. The Aran Islands Treasure Hunt is a novel and different way to try and attract more tourists to the Islands".

In terms of the story of the Aran Islands Treasure Hunt, it follows the trail of a mythical Captain O'Connolly as he scuttled through a dark and stormy night many decades ago with his fortune to the Aran Islands. But he wasn't alone - he was followed by one of his crew, Jim, who eventually discovered the treasure keys' hidden location. But due to the disastrous events of that fateful night, he did not get a chance to retrieve it.

Always intending to return to the island, he kept a diary to record the events that had occurred and inserted codes and secret texts within his account of the events that had happened.

The virtual hunt begins today and is supported by the Aran Islands Hotel. Full details are available at http://www.arantreasure.com
