Great Plains Manufacturing Using BuyDesign from TDCI to Streamline Sales Quoting and Ordering for Agricultural Equipment Products

TDCI, Inc. (TDCI), the leading provider of configurator-based software solutions, announced today that Great Plains Manufacturing (Great Plains), a leading manufacturer of agricultural and landscaping implements, has deployed TDCI's BuyDesign guided selling and configuration software to streamline quoting and ordering for the company's agricultural equipment products, including a wide range of implements such as drills, tillage equipment, planters, seeders, and sprayers. In the first phase of deployment, Great Plains territory managers throughout North America are now using BuyDesign Channel Sales and the BuyDesign product configurator on their laptop PCs to develop quotes for both end customer retail orders and dealer inventory orders. Nearly 100% of Great Plains' agricultural business is already going through the BuyDesign-based system Great Plains has branded QuotePro. Great Plains is now preparing for the second phase of deployment where the system will be made available for dealer self-service quoting and ordering on-line via the Internet. Pilot dealers will start using the system within a few weeks.

"Our sales people are extremely happy with BuyDesign," says Tom Evans, Great Plains Vice President of Sales. "The system guides them step by step through the model and option selection process, ensuring that a valid product is specified and an accurate price is generated. This is a big improvement over the manual, paper-based process we used before BuyDesign. We have many products and models, all with many options; so this has made a complex process far simpler for everyone involved, and has greatly improved order accuracy."

Using BuyDesign on their laptops, Great Plains territory managers can work with dealers at the dealer showroom or at a customer's farm to interactively configure and price a product. Once quotes are accepted, orders are sent electronically to Great Plains headquarters where they are entered into the company's business system. Information is no longer communicated in hand-written form. "BuyDesign is also making life easier for our order desk people because they no longer have to go back to the dealer or sales person to verify information that's hard to read or to correct configurations that may be invalid," Evans adds.

BuyDesign is also making it much easier to disseminate product and pricing changes. All product information is managed centrally. Laptop PCs in the field are automatically updated via the Internet using BuyDesign's electronic synchronization capabilities."

A QuotePro feature that will become especially valuable as dealers begin using the system directly is a "sales analysis" capability that enables sales people to integrate trade-in, incentive, and financing information into a single quote worksheet that analyzes dealer margin and produces a customer quote that includes trade-in allowance along with other important financial factors.

"With QuotePro based on BuyDesign, we now have sophisticated quoting and ordering capabilities at a par with, or better than, anyone in the agricultural equipment industry. It's an important tool in support of our plans for continued growth." summarizes Evans.

In addition to the role-out of quoting and ordering capabilities, Great Plains is currently in the process of integrating BuyDesign Configurator into their Friedman Frontier ERP system where it will automate generation of manufacturing information to drive production.

Great Plains Information Technology Manager, Karla Jones adds: "In addition to the fact that it provides a very easy to use quoting and ordering solution, we selected BuyDesign because of the flexibility it gives us to deploy on both the web and distributed PCs with a single point of control, and because we can effectively integrate it with our existing Friedman ERP system."
