The official one year anniversary of Austin Art Space will feature the artists that made its opening possible. The "Nine Lives in Art" Exhibit includes all nine original resident artists that moved into the working studios space prior to the completion of the gallery section. All continue to create there today. The exhibit runs October 1-24, 2009 with the formal celebration slated for a special artists' celebration reception on October 23 from 6:00-9:00 pm.

Austin Art Space opened in November 2008 as a cooperative space for established and emerging artists to create, collaborate and present their work. Three of the founding artists: Valerie Walden, Jan Knox and Rebecca Bennett expanded on their experiences together at Artspoken Gallery to create a unique art venue in north Austin. Despite protracted economic uncertainty, the gallery has flourished.

Valerie Walden, manager of the co-op said, "It has been challenging to start and run an art gallery in this economic environment. But, it's been exhilarating to be able to present so much art to so many people in such a short time. Since we opened 11 months ago, Austin Art Space has hosted 13 separate exhibitions including three juried shows. And, we have showcased over 70 different artists from all over Texas, and as far away as New York, Alaska and New Zealand. We think Austin Art Space is well on its way to becoming an integral part of the local and regional art scenes."

The October 23 reception will be both a celebration and affirmation for the dedicated, prolific artists-in-residence. It was they who were featured in the gallery's very first exhibit at its grand opening last year, also titled "Nine Lives in Art". This marks only the second time that all nine artist's work has been presented together. The gallery will be hung with paintings that range from the literal to the abstract, from oils and pastels to mixed media and collage, from the imposing to the diminutive. The working studio space will handle the overflow artwork and will be open to the public for viewing. In all, over 100 pieces will be on display.

A cadre of patrons, local artists and friends are expected to attend the wine and hors d'oeuvres anniversary reception. Collectively, the artists are members of numerous art groups on the local and regional level including the Austin Visual Arts Association, the Austin Pastel Society, the Southwest Pastel Society, Plein Air Austin, Waterloo Watercolor Group and Creative Arts Society. Many of the artists have an enthusiastic followings of art lovers including regular patrons of the former Artspoken that will turn out to celebrate the anniversary.

The Austin Art Space calendar is full for the remainder of the year. The Creative Arts Society Show is set for Oct. 26-Nov. 7; followed by the "Artitude" Exhibit, Nov. 9-22. After that, the gallery continues a tradition from Artspoken by holding the Fifth Annual "12 Buy12" Show, Dec.1-21 with artists' reception on Dec.5. It is a juried exhibition and sale of more than 100 works no larger than 12"x12" created by artists from all over the world. The small size makes the art more affordable for holiday gift giving. This year's juror is Bill Keese, President of the Austin Visual Arts Association.
