Workout Against Cancer is a free sports themed health fair on Friday, September 25 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Cancer Treatment Radiation Oncology Center at One Presidential Boulevard in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. It is an opportunity for people in the community to improve their sports skills, learn about prostate health, support cancer research and tour one of the region's newest sites for cancer treatment.
Free prostate cancer screenings with PSA blood test will be offered. Experts will talk about prostate health, nutrition, lowering your cancer risk, prostate cancer treatments and family support.
The day includes lots of fun activities as well. Here's some of what you can expect:
- Fitness training, basketball fun and golf lessons for all ages and abilities
- Healthy food and drinks (including Kosher food from Shalom Catering)
- Good music
- Appearances from radio personality Patty Jackson from WDAS and Phil Martelli, men's basketball coach from Saint Joseph's University
Guests will also have an opportunity to tour the facility and learn about its ClubCare™ concept that combines personalized cancer treatment with advanced technology and academic research excellence in a uniquely comfortable environment. The event is presented by Philadelphia Cancer Treatment Radiation Oncology Center and Urologic Consultants of Southeastern Pennsylvania to increase awareness of prostate cancer as well as support Prostate Health International and its Father's Day Run 4 Your Life.
"This year's Run was especially poignant since we lost our friend Gary Papa to prostate cancer only two days before," says Dr. Larry Belkoff, urologist and co-founder of the Radiation Oncology Center. "Gary and his supporters have helped shine the light on the need for education and research." Papa, 6ABC long-time sports director, had co-chaired the Run for the past five years.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men, with one in six or seven men diagnosed in their lifetime. "It often has no symptoms in its earliest stages, but is very treatable. That's why screenings are so important," says Belkoff's partner, Dr. Phillip Ginsberg. "We are proud to partner with Prostate Health International and our sponsors to help men get the screenings that could save their lives." Sponsors and exhibitors will include The Aquatic and Fitness Center and The Wellness Community. No advance registration is required and all activities are free.
