BACnet International today announced that Opera Electronics Inc., a leading manufacturer of automated gas sensors, is now a Silver-level sponsor of BACnet International. Opera manufactures gas detectors used to measure and limit toxic gases in indoor parking garages and maintenance garages for trucks and heavy vehicles. In the past, the company used their own proprietary network to communicate between devices. The company will now focus its efforts on expanding the capabilities of its product line and integrating with other BACnet products. Keith Rasmussen, Opera's Sales Director, explained their decision to use the BACnet communication protocol, "While we have been using our own proprietary network to communicate between devices for the past 10 years, we have also looked at some of the other so-called, 'standard' protocols and have been unimpressed. Standardizing on BACnet will allow us to focus on what we do best, designing and manufacturing gas sensors." Mr. Rasmussen also commented on joining BACnet International, "Opera is a small company, and I am excited at the idea of us being part of a multi-vendor community, where we will be measured by the 'bang-per-buck' that our products deliver. BACnet will open up new markets to us as the world goes, increasingly, plug-and-play."

Andy McMillan, President of BACnet International and President/CEO of Teletrol Systems, commented on Opera Electronics joining BACnet International, "We are pleased to welcome Opera Electronics to the BACnet community and applaud their commitment to developing their products using open standards. Because of increased regulations for acceptable air quality in commercial buildings, Opera's BACnet based gas sensors will play a critical role in building automation." McMillan added, "With every new member in the BACnet community, we get closer to a more complete and compelling value chain where manufacturers and building owners and operators stand to benefit."
