Los Angeles, Anaheim and Palmdale Choose Pearson's Professional Development Programs; Legislation Supports Weeklong Workshops for K-12 Instructors

Recognizing the critical importance of professional development for their teachers, California school districts are taking advantage of legislation that provides funding for additional math training for K-12 teachers.

Under grant provisions of Senate Bill 472, now extended through 2012, Los Angeles, Anaheim, and Palmdale Schools have chosen the education and technology company Pearson -- a State Board of Education approved training provider -- to conduct innovative and highly popular five-day intensive sessions for elementary math teachers.

Pearson's vice president for California Vicky Bush said, "We trained 1,300 elementary teachers this summer in LAUSD, and nearly a thousand more in just this past month in Anaheim and Palmdale."

Bush attributes the phenomenal response to teachers being so energized about learning how to bring to life the interactive and engaging nature of Pearson's new enVisionMATH program.

"We've also found that school districts are responding to the flexibility we offer in scheduling the sessions as well as the intensive nature of the math training which teachers tell us is seriously enhancing their skills," said Bush.

On participating teacher said she "learned how to become a better math teacher" because she gained a comprehensive understanding of the enVisionMATH program and how to apply the program to her students.

"I enriched my understanding of the district standards for first grade as well as kindergarten and second grade," she added. "I collaborated with colleagues on standards that were difficult to teach, and strategies to teach them."

Bush said that historically it has been the county offices of education that have provided teacher-training services. Now, however, districts are seeing the value in the continuity and expertise offered by the Pearson training team.

The Pearson SB 472 Institutes offer a five-day immersion approach that focuses on instruction of Pearson's enVisionMATH program, the #1 math curriculum in the US today. Bush noted the following points related to the training:

o    Pearson instructors have extensive mathematics backgrounds and experience as math professional development facilitators;
o    As developers of the enVisionMath program, Pearson is the most knowledgeable about the program and its trainers are the most qualified to instruct others;
o    Pearson training is designed so that teachers explore the California Mathematics Content Standards/Curriculum Framework in depth by participating in the strategies that they will use in the classroom;
o    Strategies are modeled that address students' diverse needs such as scaffolding and culturally relevant learning strategies;
o    Teachers engage in Standards Based activities - aligned to the enVisionMATH topics - that broaden their content knowledge.

"Across the State, we're finding that school districts are welcoming Pearson as their partner," said Bush. "They believe we are in the best position to help them to maximize their own skills and enhance their ability to provide a solid foundation and understanding of math concepts and skills to their students."
