Operating from Washington, PA in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Washington County's Emergency 911 call center handles approximately 1,000 calls per day and is responsible for dispatching all Public Safety departments including Fire, Police and Hazmat on a 7x24 basis. With a growing population of over 200,000 residents, a new casino and several major interstates traversing the County, public safety incidents are magnified with the increased volume of traffic and development. Technologies like VMware played an important role in ensuring the day-to-day operations of the 911 call center were not affected. The capabilities of VMware provided synergIT the framework to perform the hardware and physical building upgrades while 911 operators were handling real-time emergency situations. Virtualization benefits are now being realized by the Center across several key areas including business continuance (the ability of the center to survive planned and unplanned outages through system and site level redundancies), increased efficiencies in system maintenance and reduced operating costs.

"During our VWworld - 2009 presentation, we discussed the nature of the 911 Center and the requirement of a virtualization platform with robust, mature features. We've seen this come full circle now with some of the initial vendors involved changing how they leverage VMware in support of such critical systems" continued Mr. Walker. Prior experiences were leveraged in creative ways to remain flexible to constant changes, adapting to the new constraints and meeting the objectives. In any large complex project, it certainly helps to be able to anticipate the challenges and risks and adapt the approach. In this environment, the risks were ratcheted up and failure was not an option. We met the project objectives without a single loss of the ability to provide emergency Fire, Police and EMS services to the inhabitants of Washington County. The entire project team was tested - repeatedly - and the ability to deal with obstacles and keep moving forward was paramount."
Washington County also understood there were going to be challenges to the project, but with the right project team and solutions in place the benefits would certainly outweigh the alternatives of not upgrading the 911 call center for the future.
