Piedmont, MO (PRWEB) September 26, 2009
McAllister Software Systems®, makers of AVImark® veterinary software, has added two new security features to help AVImark customers comply with the new Federal Trade Commission's Red Flags Rule, which goes into effect on Nov. 1.
These security features, available in the latest AVImark release (version 2009.1.0.9072), will protect clients' social security numbers and driver's license information in the Client Area of the software. These functions are not set up by default when the update is installed, so veterinary practices must activate these settings.
"Because identity theft and protecting customer information is a hot button in today's environment, we all need to safeguard our data as much as possible and watch for signs that indicate whether data has been compromised," said Stephen McAllister, president of McAllister Software Systems. "We recommend that all of our clinics download the latest version of AVImark and take the time to learn about the new Red Flags Rule, not only to be in compliance with the FTC, but also to ensure the integrity and protection of customer data."
The FTC's Red Flags Rule requires veterinarians, as well as other types of businesses and organizations, to implement a written Identity Theft Prevention Program designed to detect the warning signs of identity theft in their daily operations. The new AVImark release will not, by itself, make any veterinary practice compliant with the Red Flags Rule, but it will help with compliance by protecting sensitive information such as client social security numbers.
McAllister Software Systems has provided additional Red Flags compliance information in its latest "ReadMe" document, posted on http://www.avimark.net. Veterinarians can find additional information about the Red Flags Rule at http://www.ftc.gov/redflagsrule.
