The MISS Foundation, a family bereavement organization, invites mourning individuals and communities to share in two expressive arts activities that help with the grief experienced during the emotionally difficult time of the holidays.

MISSing Ingredients: A Re-member-ing Cookbook

It is widely understood that the holiday season is emotionally difficult for those mourning the loss of a loved one. Members of the community are invited to participate in two Expressive Arts activities geared towards "grief and the holidays," sponsored by the MISS Foundation (, a volunteer run 501(c)3 organization which supports bereaved families around the world.

Recipes are now being accepted for the "MISSing Ingredients: A Re-member-ing Cookbook," a cookbook dedicated to and honoring loved ones who have passed away. "HeARTwork for the Holidays" encourages the bereaved, young and old, to draw or paint their feelings. Then, their HeARTworks are transferred onto items such as mouse pads, mugs, aprons and other memorabilia items that can be kept or given away for gifts. There is no charge to submit a recipe or create artwork. The only cost is associated with ordering a cookbook or product, proceeds of which benefit the MISS Foundation.

The EXPRESSIVE ARTS include many art techniques including, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, dance, letter writing, journaling and even a recipe. MISS Foundation volunteer, Kathy Sandler, states "the idea is that the process of making a piece of art, in whatever form it takes, channels the emotion of grief outside of the body into a tangible object. The emotion becomes something concrete, and can be physically touched, held, honored, and even shared. There is no age minimum or age limit. The product becomes a reflection of emotion felt at that moment in time. And this very act can be therapeutic to the bereaved."

The recipe submission deadline is October 5, 2009, with the first 200 recipes accepted. The deadline for the HeARTwork for the Holidays is October 23, 2009. The anticipated delivery of cookbooks and HeARTwork products is early December, in time for the holiday gift giving.
