Why / Background

Virgil H. Simons founded The Prostate Net in 1996 after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. At the time, there was little readily accessible information to help prostate cancer patients and their families make informed treatment decisions. Moreover, Simons learned that black men bear a much greater risk for prostate cancer, both in regard to incidence and mortality, but found that there was no vehicle for educating that population about their situation. The Prostate Net was founded to meet these two critical needs.

Today, prostate cancer patients, their families and the public can access The Prostate Net's website http://theprostatenet.org to find empowering information to make informed treatment decisions and learn about the disease in general. Recognizing that people absorb information differently, The Prostate Net also features Pod Casts, Web Casts and an opt-in cell cast network as well as a Toll-Free "Hotline" for those seeking one-to-one support. The Prostate Net's newsletter, "In The Know," may be viewed online and is also available through free subscription.

Support for the Prostate Cancer Symposium is made possible by an educational grant from AstraZeneca, Purdue Pharma and Genentech.
