Software Pioneer and Founder, Tom McCabe, Honored with Impact Award

Award Presented at ACM SIGSOFT Foundations of Software Engineering Symposium

Amsterdam, The Netherlands (PRWEB) October 7, 2009 -- McCabe Software, Inc. is proud to announce that its founder and software quality visionary, Thomas J. McCabe, has won the prestigious Impact Paper Award for his renowned piece, "A Complexity Measure".

The award was presented to McCabe by the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (ACM SIGSOFT) at their 2009 Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering (FSE) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

"ACM SIGSOFT recently established the ACM SIGSOFT Impact Paper Awards to recognize papers from SIGSOFT-sponsored meetings that have had a fundamental impact on the field of software engineering, both in research and in development practice," said David Rosenblum, ACM SIGSOFT's Chair. "We are delighted to recognize Tom McCabe's seminal paper 'A Complexity Measure', which described one of the earliest attempts to define an objective metric for characterizing and comparing the complexity of software systems."

McCabe's paper was originally published in the July of 1976 edition of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering. The piece described a graph-theoretic complexity measure and illustrates how it can be used to manage and control program complexity. It has continued to be an important resource and reference for the software engineering industry for over a generation.

"Today, software projects routinely rely on the McCabe metric, and many subsequent metrics derived from or inspired by it, to help plan development and maintenance efforts and to identify opportunities for reducing software system complexity," continues Rosenblum, who is also the Head of Software Systems Engineering at University College London. "The impact of Tom McCabe's work has been, well, immeasurable."
