The Fall 2009 Parents’ Choice® Audio Awards celebrate musicians and storytellers who create original material to deliver intelligent, inventive lyrics and tell captivating stories that grab and keep a child’s attention. These creative and talented individuals use a fresh approach and leave an imprint on their audience, while helping children learn and strengthen language skills in a fun and engaging manner.

Listening to song lyrics that resonate with a child’s experiences, a well told story, or a book on CD, helps children become participatory and reflective listeners and learners. Audio books are known to build vocabulary, stimulate imagination and increase reading fluency, especially in reluctant readers; Music can build connections to dramatic play, art, social studies, and language arts as well as encouraging musical expression and experimentation. From classic tales and fables retold, to stories read aloud to fresh and inventive music, the audio category is one parents should not overlook. Listening is critical to learning.

What makes Parents’ Choice Award-winning musicians and storytellers so special?
“Parents’ Choice Audio Award winners know what it takes to grab and keep a child’s attention. They write original songs and stories deliver intelligent, inventive lyrics; they craft and tell captivating stories, in words and in music. They create magical worlds that kids believe – and want to live in – if even for only a few minutes. Serious or silly, the material is delivered with a respect for the audience and the medium,” said Claire Green, president of Parents’ Choice Foundation.

The Parents’ Choice Awards evaluation process is a lengthy and confidential one designed to benefit children, parents, caregivers, librarians and educators not producers or manufacturers. Looking for products that entertain and teach with flair, stimulate imagination and inspire creativity, judges are interested in how a product helps a child grow: socially, intellectually, emotionally, ethically and physically. Products must be free of bias. Above all, products must not extol violence.
