TrainSmart, Inc. Selected to Facilitate Train-the-Trainer Workshop and Build Knowledge Worker Curriculum, Increasing UL's Instructor Pool

The information that I found most usable is how to plan for presentations and group activities. All of the information will help me develop and present training material more effectively.

Gregory Jenkinson, Technical Training Manager for Underwriters Laboratories' (UL) Technical College awarded corporate training company, TrainSmart the contract for delivering Train-the-Trainer (TTT) workshops to UL's highly-skilled engineers and laboratory technicians, also known as "Knowledge Workers". The Train-the-Trainer course exemplifies UL's commitment to "raising the bar" for both its customers and employees. It provides UL's staff opportunities to improve their skills by sharing detailed processes within the business, which will benefit both UL staff and UL customers.

Beginning in 2007, Greg Jenkinson, North America Program Manager for UL University, began to host TTT for all senior technical staff (engineers and lab technicians) in an attempt to not only prepare and develop instructors for professional and effective delivery of their safety science topics, but also to strengthen UL's understanding of training beyond the training department.

"We needed a partner that could deliver a consistent program, globally. We were also looking for a partner that would be able to work with us on a complete Knowledge Transfer/Worker curriculum for our technical staff to help them transfer knowledge to our future generations of safety engineers and lab technicians."

As the Baby Boomers prepare for retirement, it is critical that the next generation of UL's technical staff be empowered with skills, tools and confidence to take on the responsibilities and challenges of the future. UL's vision, training strategies and implementation has them positioned to support their clients by having the next generation of Safety Experts prepared to continue to provide the UL high-level of excellent certification.

UL is working with TrainSmart to develop and deliver courses on the topics of Instructional Design 101, Storytelling, Improv, Mentoring, Structured On-the-Job training, and Job Aid Video development.

Most recently, UL piloted a TrainSmart course on how to deliver structured on-job-training. The course includes the mentoring soft skills, process, performance evaluation, and documentation required to support and enhance the skills of UL's Knowledge Worker professionals.

The workshops will be conducted throughout the U.S. and at this year's conclusion approximately 220 will be certified to teach for UL. Visit UL website to learn more about how to apply for your product's certification. http://www.ul.com

Here is what a few students from UL had to say about the program:

"This course is very useful for anyone who needs to train others, develop training materials and do any type of public speaking. I felt very comfortable and stayed interested. The instructor(s) are amazing. I will be able to apply knowledge that I gained to the development of the transaction center's training program," said Penny, Underwriters Laboratories.

"The information that I found most usable is how to plan for presentations and group activities. All of the information will help me develop and present training material more effectively," said Jim, Underwriters Laboratories.

"The information that I found most usable is the development process and the various ways to involve the audience. This workshop will greatly help me prepare and give UL seminars." - Jeff, Underwriters Laboratories

"This was a great class, extremely useful information and practice and friendly instructors. The topics that were my biggest takeaways include the use of ice breakers, gaining buy in from participants, understanding and recognizing the different learning styles and presentation training techniques." - Michelle, Underwriters Laboratories
