Candidate for Texas State Representative District 98 (R, Tarrant County), Giovanni Capriglione, signed the Americans for Tax Reform "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" where he committed to "oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes."

"The conservative platform is clear: do not raise taxes. Our constituents are fired up and tired of seeing promises made and promises broken. Texans are watching every penny right now and it is our responsibility to do the same for the state's budget," said Giovanni.

Capriglione's opponent, Republican incumbent Rep. Vicki Truitt, introduced a bill, HB 9, in the last legislative session that would have given local officials the ability to significantly increase taxes and fees to fund transportation projects, such as rail. The legislation, as introduced, would have resulted in large increases in the gas tax. Other taxes were on the table including emissions fees, driver's license renewal fees, new resident fees, parking fees, etc.

"This is not conservatism. Throughout Texas, taxpayers are making their voices heard loud and clear- they want fiscal responsibility through these tough economic times. Raising taxes on our already burdened citizens is unconscionable.

Organized conservative groups rivaling those of the left are forming, demanding that politicians listen. It is one thing when we see progressives in Congress pushing for higher taxes. It is beyond the pale though when Republicans try and tax their constituents."

Capriglione noted that though he was facing a tough battle against the six-term incumbent, a victory would show politicians throughout the state that being tax friendly is a dangerous stance.
