Manufacturing wind towers is difficult enough, but many have also found difficulty in accurately measuring the flatness or quality of the flange. Cables interfere with accuracy, multiple technicians are required, sensors are hard to setup, and a multitude of other issues. Geometrical correctness is made difficult because during the welding of the flange segments and during the storing of the sections, tension and/or stress can be induced. This stress can change the dimensional characteristics of the flange/segment, making it out-of-spec, then rejected. 19th century tools are no longer acceptable; these include tight wires, feeler-guages, straight edges, etc. A quality product demands that proper instrumentation is used. That quality comes from Seiffert Industrial, Inc.; in the laser business for 18 years. Seiffert Industrial is the master distributor for Status Pro geometric laser systems. These laser systems now provide an easy-to-use yet high-precision measuring system, enabling the user to obtain the information he needs quickly, accurately, and with excellent documentation. The result is a universal system capable of measuring many geometrical features on many different components including; flatness, parallelism, bore position, level, and straightness. This in itself is a bonus; the same instrument could help measure your machine tool accuracy, as well as the finished product.
Flange flatness, flange parallelism, blade hubs, blade flanges, base frames, and foundations can all be measured using the same system. The important features to provide fast measurements and one-person operation include; wireless remote control of the laser, wireless communication to the handheld device, touch-screen operation, a LARGE laser receiver, and results available immediately.
