Kansas City, Mo. (PRWEB) October 15, 2009
In conjunction with the Kansas City Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), Grantham University, http://www.grantham.edu, an online university, awarded a four-year scholarship to Sgt. Matthew Giersdorf a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) from Fort Riley, Kansas, and a four-year scholarship to Lisa Kirk, the spouse of a Non-Commissioned Officer. The scholarships, valued at $36,000 each, cover tuition costs, required textbooks, software, fees and shipping of the course materials.
Sgt. Giersdorf plans to enroll in Grantham University's Criminal Justice program. After he completes his military service, Sgt. Giersdorf would like to use his education and military experience to teach communities about the dangers of drug abuse and violence in an effort to improve the quality of life for the citizens of affected communities. Grantham University President, Dr. John LaNear, presented Sgt. Giersdorf with his scholarship at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the AUSA on September 22.
Ms. Kirk is looking forward to becoming the first of four siblings to earn a college degree. "This scholarship provides me with the opportunity to combine my 17 years of experience with a college education, which will give me additional credibility in the workplace," said Ms. Kirk. With seven children ranging in age from 7 to 20, she also wants to set a good example for them.
The scholarships were created in recognition of the AUSA's 2009 celebration of "The Year of the NCO." Applications were submitted by soldiers and spouses from the communities represented by the Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth, Topeka and KC AUSA Chapters.
"Continuing education is very important to each of our scholarship recipients and Grantham University is excited to have the opportunity to make a difference in their lives and to help them achieve their goals," said Dr. John LaNear. "Grantham University has a long-standing relationship with AUSA. We appreciate the opportunity to serve the service members, veterans, and family members of the Association."
