Building on Wikia, Inc.'s (http://www.wikia.com/) expansive fan-based wikis, today the company announced it has acquired LyricWiki (http://lyrics.wikia.com/) to provide music fans with the broadest coverage of licensed songs on the Internet. LyricWiki is the quintessential online destination to reference the words to almost one million songs, and to share information with other music fans about the songs and artists they love.
"Lyrics is one of the most commonly searched terms on the Internet today, and music fans can now access the largest collection of legitimate information about the songs they want to know about," said Gil Penchina, CEO of Wikia. "LyricWiki's song catalog may be the most comprehensive in the industry. The quality and diversity of the material on the site is only possible because of the contributions of an active and dedicated community of music lovers. Whether someone wants to learn the words to a new Lady Gaga song they heard on the radio, or to verify the lyrics to 'Blinded by the Light', the LyricWiki community delivers."
As a new Wikia property, LyricWiki users can now access all of Wikia's custom tools for fans including the visual (WYSIWYG) editor, blogs and a unique Question and Answer section where anyone can pose questions about music and receive answers from the community. LyricWiki features links to music downloads, and recommends new songs and albums for the community to enjoy. The site offers several different options to simplify people's song searches - by title, artist, album name, genre, artist's hometown, recording label, or language.
As part of the acquisition, Wikia secured a licensing deal with Gracenote, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, and global leader of digital entertainment solutions within the Internet, to ensure all music royalties will be paid to music publishers. Wikia is also aggressively looking for partners across the music industry.
LyricWiki joins a broad selection of complimentary Wikia music sites including http://Guitarhero.wikia.com/, a comprehensive database on the songs and bands featured on Activision's Guitar Hero franchise, http://Music.wikia.com/, documenting how music is tied to culture, http://Ibanex.wikia.com, a community centered around guitar maker Ibanez, as well as artist favorites: http://beatles.wikia.com/, http://holdsteady.wikia.com/, and http://ladygaga.wikia.com/.
Wikia, is now a top 100 site on the Internet according to Quantcast (http://www.quantcast.com/p-8bG6eLqkH6Avk ), and was founded by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley, as the place where millions of passionate people come to discover, create and share a shocking abundance of information on thousands of topics. Wikia's community written sites range from video games, TV and movies to health and environmental sustainability. Wikia attracts more than nine million unique visitors in the U.S. per month to its 50,000 enthusiast communities and nearly three million pages of content.
