As the ski industry gears up for its second year in a recession, Alpine Elements, a tour operator specialising in high altitude ski holidays throughout the French Alps, says there are mixed fortunes for ski and snowboarding enthusiasts keen to hit the slopes this winter.
The bad news is that this year there will not be many cheap deals in the marketplace. This is primarily because tour operators have reduced their bed numbers in anticipation of another slow year due to the continued recession and weak Pound.
The good news is that if you book sooner, rather than leaving it to the last minute, you will still be able to benefit from various special deals that tour operators are offering, in conjunction with standard early booking discounts.
The best deals to look out for are the ones that offer free lift passes or free ski hire. Since the value of the Euro is virtually level pegging with the Pound anything 'free' that would otherwise cost additional Euros is a great deal. Tour operators get preferential rates for ski extras and they are more likely to pass these on to customers then lower the actual cost of the basic holiday package.
Alpine Elements has tipped Tignes and La Plagne as resorts likely to offer the best value this season, because of their large bed banks and good snow.
A spokesperson for Alpine Elements also said "Please don't be charmed by the cheap prices of the so called Eastern Block resorts such as Bulgaria, because quite simply - you get what you pay for, and the snow is always mediocre if not dreadful - and that's even in a 'good snow year'!"
