BUILDER magazine hosted the 29th annual Builder's Choice Design and Planning Awards in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, October 8th. As the housing industry's oldest, largest and most prestigious design awards program, the Builder's Choice awards recognize the achievements of America's top residential builders and architects.

Each year a panel of notable judges are chosen to select the Builder's Choice Design and Planning Awards winners and this year was no exception. The independent jury comprised six distinguished individuals, including Stephen Muse, Muse Architects, Bethesda, MD; Ali Honarkar, Division1 Architects, Washington, DC; Catherine Benotto, Weber Thompson, Seattle, WA; Jim Tanner, TannerHecht Architecture, San Francisco, CA; Tom Glass, Glass Construction, Washington, DC; and Dan Green, Green Company, Newton Centre, MA. In all, they bestowed 5 Special Focus awards, 22 Merit awards, 10 Grand awards, and one Project of the Year.

This year's Project of the Year distinction was awarded to 1615 North Wolcott Street, a contemporary urban infill project. The project, located in Chicago, IL, was designed and built by the team of The Miller Hull Partnership, of Seattle, Chicago builder/developer Ranquist Development, and the architect of record, Osterhaus McCarthy Architects, also of Chicago.

Judges evaluated entries based on overall excellence and innovation in architecture, technology and land planning. Other criteria used were: creative use of materials; interior design; floor plan efficiency; new design explorations; timeless details freshened for today; site sensitivity, budget, and contributions to environmental sustainability.

"The Builder's Choice Awards this year are as much about perseverance in the face of great pressure as anything else. This year's winners are a reflection of the times." said BUILDER Editorial Director Boyce Thompson, noting that sustainability, affordability, and regionalism were prominent themes in this year's competition, "At a time when the housing industry is hurting, these projects showed innovation and pragmatism."

Three industry leaders also were inducted into the BUILDER - Wm. S. Marvin Hall of Fame for Design Excellence in recognition of their contributions to residential design.
