Pearson, a global leader in education, technology and services, today announced the acquisition of A+RISE (Research-based Instructional Strategies for Teachers) to expand its breadth of professional development offerings for teachers. A+RISE delivers practical and hands-on teaching strategies, training and consulting services for all teachers who have English language learners (ELLs) in their classrooms.

A+RISE is the only online program, tied to state standards, which gives teachers instructional strategies they can readily use in the classroom, and continue to return to with just-in-time, practical strategies, available in a searchable database. A+RISE also offers workshops, both face-to-face and online, for mainstream classroom teachers, with a strong focus on differentiated instruction. This acquisition builds on Pearson' s commitment to support the teaching and learning of English learners in the United States--a student population that has doubled in the past decade alone, and is expected to increase at a rate of 10 percent a year over the next ten years.

A+RISE was founded by nationally-recognized author, Evelyn Arroyo. Ms. Arroyo is a noted speaker on English language learner issues, and the author of several professional development resources, most notably the materials used in A+RISE programs, which have already supported thousands of educators nationwide in addressing the needs of their students. Her focus and passion is helping elementary and secondary teachers close the achievement gap for ELLs and all struggling learners. A former teacher, principal and district administrator, Ms. Arroyo has 25 years of experience in public education, and has won numerous awards, including district Teacher of the Year three times in Texas. Throughout her career, Ms. Arroyo has been a supportive and constructive mentor to her fellow educators, and an impassioned advocate for the needs of English language learners.

"We are committed to supporting teachers, especially those with diverse populations, as they work to improve student achievement. This acquisition will help us to expand our content, services and technology capabilities and enable us to offer increasingly rich learning solutions," said Susan Badger, CEO of Pearson's Teacher Education & Development Group. "Our experience, stability and resources are unmatched in the marketplace, allowing us to innovate and impact education by helping teachers become more effective and schools to attract and keep quality teachers."

"Pearson presents an unparalleled opportunity for A+RISE to expand Evelyn Arroyo's vision of helping English Language Learners realize their full potential," said Hugh Norwood, President of A+RISE and Trinity Education Group.

Practicing teachers also benefit from evidence-based professional development programs in mathematics, literacy, RTI and for English learners that help improve the academic achievement of diverse student populations. The company's Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) Model, developed by nationally-recognized Pearson authors Deborah Short, Mary Ellen Vogt and Jana Echevarría, is the industry's only research-driven approach to teaching English learners. SIOP® offers a specific, proven pedagogical approach to teaching both content knowledge and language skills, and it has helped instruct millions of students in the United States. With the addition of A+RISE, which works with any pedagogical approach or program, Pearson is poised to provide a comprehensive suite of face-to-face and online offerings to schools that serve English learners. Pearson's other research-based offerings for educators and school improvement include Learning Teams, which helps teachers focus the 21st Century skills of collaboration and problem solving on improving student achievement.

In addition, Pearson offers research and evaluation services in order to help school districts measure the impact of their professional development initiatives and provide critical insights to guide decisions about follow-up training and support. Pearson's Evaluation Services offers customized and off-the-shelf teacher certification assessments for more than 20 states, and partners with the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards to support their nationally recognized program.
