The AirPal® Platform Service Manual is a terrific resource for commonly asked maintenance questions. In addition to providing instructions on common maintenance items; the Service Manual also contains a copy of the product warranty, and a replacement parts list for when repairs need to be made on-site. The revised Service Manual represents AirPal's® continued efforts to update the look and feel of its website and support materials and builds upon other recent posts, such as AirPal's® Learning Module on the Platform Patient Transfer System.

The AirPal® Platform Patient Transfer System was specifically designed to address the high incidence of injuries resulting from patient handling. The System is compatible with "Safe Patient Handling Programs" and no-lift work environments. Operation is simple and straight forward and especially suited to Special Populations, such as burn victims, patients with open wounds, and Bariatrics, since forces that act against a patient during transfer are largely eliminated. Additionally, special medical fabrics assist in the care of skin by conforming to pressure management surfaces, and providing special characteristics for stretch and cushioning.

No hoists or heavy mechanical apparatus are needed for lateral patient transfer. Unlike traditional patient lifts, the device that AirPal® pioneered and brought to market has an underside that is perforated for air release. The device is attached to an air supply which forces a constant flow of high volume/low pressure air which causes the device to inflate a semi-rigid surface (or 'platform') for patient transfers or positioning. Upon inflation excess air escapes out through the perforations on the bottom of the device. A frictionless surface, literally a "cushion" of air, is formed upon which the patient is moved almost effortlessly.

Traditional hoists and patient lifts require a special apparatus and special training to maintain a patient in a horizontal or supine position. When using a traditional hoist or lift, if the patient is not properly adjusted through the use of a stretcher sling and leveler, the patient is at risk for becoming unstable. Since these systems support a patient from above, a patient is also at risk of the sling cutting in or binding the patient. Conversely, the AirPal® Platform Patient Transfer System evenly supports the patient during transfer from below, on a semi-rigid inflatable surface that protects from shear and pressure points.

The technology itself is efficient in terms of reducing the number of staff required for transfer; the device has been shown to reduce the amount of exertion required for transfer by up to 90%. In general the AirPal® Platform solves many problems that all equate to higher operational efficiencies - the product is portable and requires little room to store, reduces lifting requirements, aides patient comfort, is easy to use and requires little training, and is suitable for MRI and X-Ray transfers, etc.

Most importantly, the AirPal® Platform has a demonstrated ability to reduce the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) associated with repetitive lifting stresses amongst caregivers. The reduction in MSDs lowers Worker's Compensation costs and claims, and increases employee retention rates. Thus, the AirPal® Platform reduces operational costs and can pay for itself over time!
